Put on as part of the Manchester Pride Fringe, “The Modern Lesbian” is a photographic exhibition by Rachel Adams that acts to explore the lives of four generations of gay and bisexual women who have acted to shape the commercial,cultural and social history of gay Manchester.

Speaking to Creative Tourist about the exhibition, Adams, who is resident lenswomen at Contact Theatre and Band On The Wall, said her motivation for the project was to “… highlight the unrecognised achievements of gay women in Manchester, especially those that dared to act ahead of the curve in politics, activism and culture” and that “To bring their achievements into the present I want to create a dynamic cultural space during Pride, where everyone is invited to explore the history of Manchester’s lesbians, where women are given the chance to take part in a truly representative project, and where we can all try and understand what it means to be a lesbian today”.

Participants included in the project  range from Jackie Crozier, Pride Director; Mary Murphy, long standing Manchester Councilor; Steph Kaye, Vanilla proprietor; Rosie Lugosi, activist and burlesque artist; and Josie Pickering. The exhibition runs from 20th August to 4th September at 52 Princess Street and will also become part of a live event at Manchester Pride’s Big Weekend (28th-30th August).

Now we’re going to be honest with you. Here at Queeried Towers we’re not too hot on the golf course mainly because we don’t know one iron from the next and have no idea how to hit a golf ball if we’re not trying to make it pop into the windmill and appear out the other side.

However if you are something of a budding golfer who fancies a game with one of the coolest gay couples out there then make sure you keep Monday September 27 free because that’s the day of Stonewall’s first ever Women’s Golf Challenge fundraiser hosted by Clare Balding and Alice Arnold at the Foxhills Golf Course, Surrey whnich will see all funds go towards Stonewall’s Education for All campaign.

Speaking about why they’ve taken up the hosting role Clare and Alice jointly said:

“As keen golfers, we thought this was a perfect opportunity to raise awareness of Stonewall’s campaign and to enjoy a day out making new friends and facing new challenges (be they bunkers or water hazards!). We do hope that as many of you as possible will come to share the day with us”

Definitely worth attending just to see if Clare and Alice actually do both say things at exactly the same time, the Golf Challenge includes breakfast on arrival, champagne and strawberries, a meal at the end of the day and a prize for the best team. And for partners or friends who aren’t golf fans, spa packages are also available.

Prices for the day are £275 for individuals, or £995 for a team of four women golfers. The spa package is £150 per person. Both the Golfing Challenge and the Spa Package will be women only.

UK Black Pride have announced that theme of this year’s event will be  ‘Pride, A Deeper Love’ and will take place on Saturday 14th August in Regents Park College Inner Circle, Regents Park London NW1 4NS.

Promising that it will be the best yet, Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, UK Black Pride Director said:

“This year’s UK Black Pride looks set to better than any in the last five years. We’ve firmly established this community-led event with world class entertainers and an incredibly friendly inclusive atmosphere that makes you want to party late into the night. Hosted by Khadijatou Doyneh, Cyril Nri, Dean Atta & Skye, Queen of Lover’s Rock, Janet Kay is heading the event with performances by Jessie J, funny man Tony Hendrix, Lorna Gayle, spoken word artist Realitie also lined up alongside Whitney Houston impersonator Ikenna Amaechi, Keith Jarrett, Cat Lewis, Naechane Valentino, Anthony aka Moonchild + Potential Productionz presents Siren, Sharlz, Inspiration, Rayman & Dominator.

Speakers lined up to well speak include Topher Campbell and Ajamu from Rukus!, Peter Tatchell and Seaon Burkley Van-Sertimi from Outrage! Rev Rowland Jide Macaulay and Pav Akhtar, and if that wasn’t enough there’s also a host of DJs a market place, information stalls, empowerment workshops, dance tent, secret garden, games zone, chillout space, licensed bars and food stalls.

Yes it’s “make you feel sick that there are a lot of lesbians having a whole lot of fun” time again as we bring you Friday at The Dinah 2010 featuring the Friday pool party, Ke$ha,the Logo Red Carpet and the red hot VIP party.

The 20th Dinah Shore is currently taking place over in sunny Palm Springs and if you like us here at Queeried have had to stay at home then you’re probably feeling a bit sick imagining how much fun they’re all having.

Well stop that right now because there’s really no need to be feeling sick over what you don’t know is happening… there is however a huge big reason to feel it after seeing this video and checking out how much fun Gloria Bigelow, Mariah Hanson, Briana Stockton, Sandra Valls and Suzanne Westenhoefer are having as well as how damn hot the opening night kick off party at Zelda’s was.

If you’re going to be at The Dinah this weekend one place you definitely need to find yourself in is the SheWired lounge . Why? Because this is going to be where you’re going to find two yourself very hot and very talented women in the form of the gorgeous singer / songwriter Billie Myers, and the super talented and equally stunning actress Sheetal Sheth who starred in I Can’t Think Straight and A World Unseen.

Stonewall’s annual 10k Equality Walk will be taking place on May 2nd and will start at Brighton’s Pavilion Gardens. Attempting to build on the success of last year’s walk, which saw over 400 people take part, the American Express supported event will be the 7th Stonewall has done with it all being in aid of their work to stamp out homophobic bullying in schools.

The cost of registering for the walk is just £10 and for that you not only get to enjoy all the entertainment on the day, but also get a goody bag and a special edition t-shirt. Once you’ve done that Stonewall are then encouraging everyone to try and raise as much as they can to help their campaign to end homophobic bullying in schools, with a top fundraising prize of a luxury weekend for two in Paris including business-class travel on Eurostar, two nights’ stay in a luxury hotel and £500 spending money, courtesy of American Express Business Travel.

The walk itself winds through the heart of the city so is guaranteed to be an enjoyable affair and will help Stonewall educate not only children that homophobic bullying is not acceptable, but also help guide and train teachers on how to prevent and respond to homophobic bullying.

Last year’s walk managed to raise over £50,000 for Stonewall which went towards the production of the FIT DVD, an anti bullying film that was sent with accompanying teaching materials to every school in Britain. And if you sign up for the the walk you’ll be able to see it too as Stonewall are putting on a special screening of FIT for all Equality Walk registrants in Brighton on Thursday March 11.

Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive, in speaking about the event said:

“The Brighton Equality Walk has always been a key event in Stonewall’s fundraising calendar. This year we’re continuing our focus on stamping out homophobic bullying in schools. Secondary school teachers say that homophobic bullying is the second most frequent form of bullying in our schools.”

Whilst in countries like the United Kingdom we are able, for the most part,  to live our lives as members of the LGBT community, the sad reality is in many places around the world quite the opposite is true. And what is equally true is that whilst it’s hard to live openly in some places now, it was even harder in the past.

And that is what makes the Beyond Isis and Osiris: Alternative Sexualities in Ancient Egypt exhibtion that is being held at the Petrie Museum something very special.

Put on as part of LGBT History Month, a UK event that runs through February, this looks at lesbian and gay life in Ancient Egypt via 14 artefacts, something that admittedly isn’t a lot but as the organiser John J. Johnson says that is hardly surprising stating:

“That there is an ‘official’ somewhat censorious attitude towards homosexual acts in Pharaonic Egyptian culture is difficult to deny…The twenty-seventh declaration of the Book of the Dead is a confirmation by the deceased that he did not have homosexual relations.”

Acting to suggest this suppression proves that homosexual activity did occur, Johnson has evidence to back up such a claim, whether that be via a stela of Akhenaten and his wife Nefertiti which portrays  the heretic king in  effeminate light which suggests some hermaphroditic aspect to his heretic worship of Aten, the sun-disk and the Tale of Horus and Seth, a papyrus fragment that describes two gods laying down together where “

… At night, Seth let his member become stiff and he inserted it between the thighs of Horus…”

Also exploring the Classical Period, this exhibition looks at the alleged romance of Alexander the Great and Hephaestion, anda supposed affair between Emperor Hadrians and a young man called Antinous.

The LGBT Trail is on at the Petrie Museum at University College London until the end of the month.
