US Supreme Court Block Proposition 8 Trial Footage Being Shown On Youtube Till At Least Wednesday
The Supreme Court has responded to an appeal by the supporters of Proposition 8 in California and said that the first days of the trial on whether the gay marriage ban brought into being by Proposition 8 will not be allowed to be broadcast on Youtue.
Scheduled to begin later today in the San Francisco federal courts, Judge Vaugn Walker last week ruled he wouldn’t allow it to be broadcast on the television networks he would allow footage to be shown on Youtube with a delay. The new ruling bySupreme Court however overrules this, and will not allow footage to be broadcast until at least Wednesday to give the justices more time to consider the issue.
Opponents to the filming of the trial are against it believing it would act to intimidate witnesses, and saying in their appeal that it “has the potential to become a media circus… The record is already replete with evidence showing that any publicizing of support for Prop. 8 has inevitably led to harassment, economic reprisal, threats, and even physical violence.”
