Anne Hathaway, the Oscar nominated actress who stars in the new Alice in Wonderland adaptation by Tim Burton has told GQ magazine that she and her family left the Catholic church after her brother came out, giving her reasoning to be:

“Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?”

She also went on to say that whilst the rest of her family converted to the Episcopal church, she said that this church also did not feel right for her personally leading her to attach herself to no particular denomination describing herself as a work in progress.

Hathaway has long been an advocate for gay rights and has previously spoken of the reaction of her family to her brother coming out saying “We hugged him, said we loved him and that was that.”  She was honoured with the HRC Ally award in 2008 by the Human Rights Campaign where she spoke about how she was not being brave for standing up for gay rights but just being a decent human.
