Six Gay Storylines That Hit The UK Television Screens In 2009
1. Christian and Syed – Eastenders
Poor Christian has had to be the only gay in the village Square for much longer than any normal gay man could ever stand so it was a nice move by the Eastenders script writers to give him a boyfriend this year. However being Eastenders it was never going to be straight forward, and if the issue of religion wasn’t big enough they had to make sure the man he was falling in love with was “straight” too. Get ready for an explosive end to this storyline in January.
2. Charlie and Joey – Home and Away
Home and Away spent many a man hour promoting the fact that there was to be a lesbian relationship appearing on the soap and got everyone excited by how progressive they were being. Then what happened? Charlie and Joey had a few kisses, fell in love, Charlie decided she really was gay, Joey sailed off in a boat and Charlie promptly forgot she’d ever fallen in love with a woman.
Could do better Home and Away. A lot better.
3. Ianto and Captain Jack – Home and Away
To Captain Jack it doesn’t matter if you’re a man, woman or alien, he’ll kiss you. However there was one man that meant much more to him than just a kiss, his sidekick Ianto, and that was never more apparent than when his one true love was to die trying to save the children of the Earth.
But no we didn’t cry when we saw it, we’d just been cutting onions that day.
4. Emily and Naomi – Skins
This year’s series of Skins saw both Emily and Naomi struggle to come to terms not just with their feelings for each other but also their sexualities. Showing the impact coming out can have on not just the person, but the people around them, the scriptwriters of Skins did an impressive job in creating a storyline that young lesbians and bisexuals were able to relate to.
5. Ian and Mickey – Shameless
We have to admit to failing to be able to get any clips from the latest series of Shameless, so you’ll have to make do with some visual reminders from the previous two series. Personally Ian and Mickey are one of our favourite gay couples on the list mainly because they are so far away from the normal stereotype of what gay men are that you’d need a telescope to see them… which is in reality where you’ll find most of us (well obviously not us at Queeried, all the men are exactly like the ones in Queer As Folk and the women, well it’s like they just walked off the L Word set – please note most of this sentence is a lie)
6. Aaron and Adam – Emmerdale
One gay storyline that has only just hit our screens, and is sure to continue through into 2010 is that between Aaron Livesy and Adam Thomas on Emmerdale. Seen as one of the tough boys of the village, finding himself suddenly attracted to another man sees Aaron sent into turmoil where he is lead by his feelings, but also at the same time will do anything to reject them.
