New Australian Prime Minister Anti Gay Marriage Background Revealed

Things are a-changing in Australia following the resignation of Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister and Welsh born Julia Gillard taking up the position. Marking the first time a woman has held the position, many are hoping that this move will benefit the country following Rudd’s steady fall in popularity.

Will this progressive move mark a change for the LGBT community? Sadly in terms of gay marriage it seems not with Gillard appearing to have very similar views to Rudd, having stated in an interview with Australia’s Sky News last year that she was in agreement with the government’s position that marriage is between a man and a woman, and not between members of the gay marriage. On the more positive side she did recognise “…that there are other forms of committed adult relationships and that people want them registered and recognized.”

Saying at the time that she felt there were schemes in place to allow this, it’ll be interesting to see now she’s leading the Labour party whether these really were her views or if she was merely following party lines.
