Gay Sportsman Gareth Thomas Holds Coming Out Party (But Closeted Star Stays At Home)

Gay sportsman Gareth Thomas last night held an Attitude magazine organised coming out party to thank everyone who has supported him since he revealed that he was gay.

Held at the Movida, a London nightclub well known for it’s celebrity clientele, Thomas and a number of other high profile gay celebrities were joined by his teammates and other rugby players at the event but apparently there was one invited figure missing – another high-profile gay sportsman who has yet to come out.

Thomas however made it clear that the event was never meant to be about outing people, and hinted that the decline of an invitation by the gay sportsman was not necessarily tied to sexuality saying :

“It’s not really about outing people. And, you know, when people have a game or an event, they can’t really go out drinking.”

Talking to those gathered at the event, which included Graham Norton, Peter Tatchell, Will Young and Russell Tovey, Thomas spoke of the change that was occurring concering being openly gay saying

“Everyone here tonight is here to celebrate the world changing. . . It’s ok to be a sportsman and it’s ok to be gay.”

Describing Gareth’s decision to come out asĀ  “wonderful” Will Young commented that it was a great step forward concerning fighting homophobia in the sports world, but believed it would take time before more sportsmen and women felt comfortable being out at a high level.
