Who Are The Gay MPs Heading Down The Rainbow Path To Westminister?
The voting is over and whilst the results are still coming trickling in, it looks like the country is turning Blue with Gordon Brown soon to be handing over the keys to Number 10 to David Cameron. With recent gaffs and homophobic comments this doesn’t seem all together good news for the LGBT community, however what is positive to see is the number of LGBT MPs that will be heading off to Westminster to stand up for our rights:
The Conservatives
For many of the LGBT having the Conservatives running the country wasn’t something we were hoping would happen, however the good news is that we’re actually going to be fairly well represented in the Houses of Parliament by the Blues who saw five LGBT members elected last night, with three of them already leading shadow ministers.
Winning in the Rutland and Melton constituency, shadow minister Alan Duncan took 51% of the vote, whilst his fellow minister Nick Herbert took 57.8% of Arundel and South Downs vote, whilst Greg Barker took 51% of the vote in Bexhill and Battle.
Away from shadow cabinet positions, Iain Stewart won his Milton Keynes South seat whilst Stuart Andrew won his for Pudsey. Margot James was however the only lesbian winner for the Conservatives winning her seat in Stourbridge.
The Labour Party
The Labour Party has also seen it’s leading gay MPs retain their seats with Ben Bradshaw narrowly winning his Exeter seat with 38.2%, Chris Bryant retaining his with 55.3% of the vote, and Angela Eagle retaining hers with 51.8%.
Other LGBT winners for the party included Nick Brown for Newcastle Upon Tyne East, Stephen Twigg for Liverpool West Derby and Clive Betts for Sheffield Attercliffe.
The Liberal Democrats
The Liberal Democrats so far have three LGBT MPs off to Westminister – Stephen Williams for Bristol West , Stephen Gilbert for St Austell and Newquay and Simon Hughes for Bermondsey and Old Southwark.
