Born on December 1st, 1976 Matthew Shepard would have turned 34 in 2010. He was however never given the chance to even reach his thirties because on October 7th 1998 two men Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson took Matthew to a remote area in Laramie, Wyoming tied him to a split rail fence then severely assaulted him.
Leaving him beaten and dying, the two left and Matthew was not discovered until 18 hours later when a cyclist mistook him for a scarecrow. Still alive at this point, Matthew lived for another five days before dying at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado with his family by his side.
A man who was wonderfully easy to talk to, made friends easily and was committed to gaining equality for all, Matt was all about replacing hate with compassion, acceptance and understanding which is exactly the same ethos of the Matthew Shepard Foundation set up by his parents.
Committed to supporting diversity programs in education and making sure youth organizations are able to create environments where young people are about feel safe and supported, the Matthew Shepard Pendant has been designed by Love And Pride to help fund these projects with 100% of the proceeds going straight to the Foundation.
Made out of titanium, this Matthew Shepard pendant is designed in a chunky circular style with a hollow centre and the words “Compassion”, “Acceptance” and “Understanding” written engraved around it on the top surface, to the bottom are the words “Erase” and “Hate”. Hung from an adjustable suede cord, the pendant measures 1in x 1in and is available in the standard version with either a black suede cord or a pink suede cord.
The Matthew Shepard Foundation Pendant is available for $59.00 from Love and Pride.
