Discover Why Kirstie Allsopp Is Our Hero (And Should Be Syed And Christian’s Too)
Here at Queeried we’ve always loved the rather splendifious Kirstie Allsopp of Location Location Location fame, but following Friday’s episode of Eastenders we have to say our love has been taken to a whole new level … and no don’t worry you didn’t somehow miss her skipping across the Albert Square, because the reason why is how she responded to it.
Having watched Zainab Masood confront the gay character Christian Clarke about his behaviour towards her son Syed, with whom he has been having a secret affair, and telling him to “Take your perverted obsession elsewhere. What you do makes me feel sick.”, Allsopp took it upon herself to tweet the following concerning the homophobic content of the script:

And after this sparked off something of a debate, she also added the following:
In response, the BBC have defended the script telling Digital Spy, “Since this storyline began, EastEnders has always shown a balance of opinions to ensure that we capture the many different views of the characters involved. Zainab has always been an extremely opinionated character but her views do not go unchallenged and it is within these conflicts that the drama unfolds.”, adding “we have taken great care in portraying this sensitive storyline and we always ensure that our episodes are suitable for the timeslot in which they are shown”.
Personally we can see the argument from both sides, however, in this case we have to say we’re more with Kirstie. Showing such scenes at a time when children are likely to still be up and watching does seem to be a tad irresponsible as it assumes adults will be around to explain to them that this behaviour and perceptions are appropriate, and as we are all too sadly aware this isn’t necessarily the case.
Great work on the storyline Eastenders, but we’re going to have to deduct a couple of marks.
