Beverley Knight States She’s Committed To Stopping Homophobia In The Music Industry

Soul singer Beverley Knight , who recently released her latest album, 100%, has spoken out against homophobia in the music industry whilst being questioned by Times Online and fans as part of a live webcast.

Asked by a fan called Dan the question:

Hi Bev. Do you think the homophobia in many areas of music that you campaigned against is still as prevalent?

Beverley responded by saying:

Hey Dan, homophobia is still out there. Many artists don’t care that their words cut like a sword. As long as they exist and people buy them, I’ll be out there doing my best to stop it.

This is not the first time that Beverley Knight has shown her support for the LGBT community. Following the death of her close friend, the television presenter Tyrone Jameson, of AIDs back in 2004, Knight has spoken out passionately about homophobia in music many times, particularly concerning reggae musicians and black artists telling the Voice newspaper that she thinks:

“…. black people need to remember that whenever they gay-bash, they’re bashing at least ten per cent of their own community. I know a number of young, gay black men who live a lie every day of their lives because they are terrified of the ramifications of just being themselves.

“My friend who died hated the fact that being a black, gay man had to be such a burden for him. So it really breaks my heart to hear talented reggae artists falling into this trap of gay-bashing.”
