Art: Influence – Phil Hansen

Inspired by a desire to understand whole individuals and idea through the fragments of perceptual memory, the sound bites, and the semiotic tokens collected by society and
recollected by the individual, Hansen aims through this art to combine these as one to look for a more holistic understanding.

Using a range of different mediums that are as diverse as the Bible and his own torso, Hansen sees these mediums as being as important as the art work itself with Influence being a prime example.

Created in 2007, this piece of artwork sees Hansen use his torso as a canvas for  30 different portraits which he layers upon each other before finally peeling the whole thing off his chest and producing the simple silhouette portrait above.
