Colin Firth, who can currently be seen playing the role of a gay college professor George Falconer in the film adaptation of the book, A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood, has told Parade that he still feels the movie industry makes it hard for actors to feel they can be openly gay.

Attributing much of the problem to the sexual taboos in place in the industry, Firth said the problem seem to be biggest in Hollywood, highlighting how “I know that some actors are far more circumspect about keeping that secret hidden. There are not a lot of openly gay leading men.”

On the positive side, Firth spoke of how he felt the film, which has been directed by Tom Ford, has a positive message about homosexuality, with the character  not only comfortable with his own sexuality, but also open about it, a nd is able to show that love between two people of the same-sex is something very normal and universal.

Firth’s comments reinforce those of openly gay actor Rupert Everett who last week spoke of how he felt coming out can have a negative impact on an actor’s career.
